The VS90 is a new and exciting design that was born in early 2006. The basic idea was to create a sailboat that could handle most any condition with out the need for extra rigs or expensive hardware. It needed to be big enough to sail in open water, but small enough to transport and handle without alot of fuss.
The design itself was influenced by the TP52 class that race internationally in the "big boat world". These are large powerful boats that sail to a box rule which controls size and sail area, as well as depth and weight. This makes the boats more competitive to race while giving designers some freedom with hull design.
Some of the basic design features of the VS90 are:
1.A fine entry and moderate beam, which is a characteristic of modern boat design, translates to good overall stability and boat speed.
2.Generous sail area means that the VS90 sails well in light to medium air. For heavier air sailing, an adjustable traveler system has been incorporated. This allows de-powering of the mainsail when necessary.
3.With a deck design similar to the TP52, the VS90 has an open transom and a removable cabin top for internal access. There are also molded hatches in the cockpit for battery and rudder access.
4.A carbon fiber rig keeps the weight above deck at a minimum. This helps keep the boat on its feet sailing upwind.
5.A deep fin keel also helps the VS90 point high and contributes to the overall stability of the design.
Construction (subject to change)
The new VS90 is built using VAC-Forming techniques with ABS plastic. All internal structure parts are made from molded ABS plastic.
(These parts include the fin/keel box, bulkheads, any and all internal bracing, as well as deck and cabin top.)
The keel is made from laser cut Aluminum.
The standing rigging is 100% carbon fiber.
All running rigging is Stainless Steel where applicable.
Rudder is made from wood core with fiberglass overlay.
